I’d been searching for the best sandwich in town when in walked a tall drink of water with a sandwich like no other. I asked her what she was eating.  She replied, “It’s a Magnum, with Pepperjack Cheese. Cannon-sized, of course.”  I knew at that moment that I had to have one of those sandwiches.  I asked her where she got it.  “D & D Deli,” she replied, “and it came with chips, a pickle and a cookie.” The case of the Hungry Detective was about to be solved.
It was a dark and stormy night.  Dale had been tossing around ideas about lunch in his head like a salad.  Over the past few weeks, it seemed that more and more people were stopping by in the breakroom for a sandwich.  They were in a hurry and had no time to go get anything for lunch.  Always the one that loves to help people in their time of need, it finally hit him.  Why not offer a complete sandwich service to those in the office that had the misfortune of not being able to sit down in the breakroom and enjoy a sandwich?  It made sense and on the way to work the next day, he discussed the idea with David and by the time they got to work, D&D Deli was born.

But it couldn't just be a place that made the best custom made sandwiches.  It had to be more.  It had to have more.  Drawing upon a life lesson that the two brothers learned early on, their slogan was a natural.  It was their parents that taught them that no matter how hard life gets or no matter how great it is, everything's better with a sandwich.  Even if you are having a sandwich for lunch, it can be better with another sandwich.  So the slogan was more than just words, it was a lifestyle.

Once the basic menus was set, the thought occurred to Dale that their love for TV Detective shows would make a great way to identify their different sandwiches.   Utilizing their love and knowledge for their various detectives and policemen, the menu began to take shape.

Everything's Better with a Sandwich

As you can see from the original menu, the brothers put together an impressive list of sandwiches and named them appropriately. "It was difficult to try to narrow the list down from the great detectives and policemen that we know and love," said David in an interview from 2009.  He went on to say that if the deli would have been allowed to continue, there would have been a revised menu to include additional sandwiches including Pimento Cheese, Liverwurst and a Brat. Whatever the plans for the brother's deli at Hitachi, the world will never know.

What we do know is that in 2017, the brothers were asked to open their doors once again for a special reason.  Asked if the deli might be opened to help Bryan's House through Hitachi's 2017 Food Drive, the answer was a resounding YES!.  On July 25, 2017, they did so with a special one day event with a Rock and Roll theme and it was a success.

In 2018, the brothers were once again asked to open their doors to help the Boys and Girls Club and provide another one day event with a Back to the Future Themed 50's Diner.  As expected, the event was a success.

In July, 2019, the world has another chance to experience D&D Deli.  This time with a Disney Themed Menu.  Enjoy!
